About J-PEAKS

Program for Forming Japan’s Peak Research Universities
(J-PEAKS)

The Program for Forming Japan’s Peak Research Universities (J-PEAKS) is a national initiative that supports universities with distinctive research strengths, enabling them to strategically expand their research activities and enhance their international presence.

Through J-PEAKS, selected universities promote internationally competitive research, address regional challenges, and contribute to solving national and global issues through collaboration and the formation of strong research networks.
The program is jointly administered by MEXT and JSPS, and Chiba University was selected in December 2023 in recognition of its research strengths and societal impact.

About Chiba University J-PEAKS

At Chiba University, J-PEAKS focuses on four areas of research excellence: immunology and vaccinology, preventive medicine, integrated big-data analysis of Earth observation, and neutrino-driven multi-messenger astronomy.

Through these priority fields, the University aims to accelerate the societal application of research outcomes—from next-generation vaccines to advances in global environmental and remote-sensing science—while strengthening interdisciplinary collaboration and international partnerships.

①Building the Foundations for Research Excellence and Cultivating Talent for Sustainable Career Pathways

Establishing New Institutional Structures

  • Data Science Core (DSC)
The DSC, established in 2024, strengthens data-driven research by providing advanced computing resources and rapidly adopting new technologies. Through cross-disciplinary initiatives such as hackathons and short seminars, DSC fosters collaboration and develops data science talent, supporting research and innovation across the University.
  • The Next Generation in vivo Research Exploratory Center (cNIVR)
The cNIVR explores and develops next-generation in vivo research approaches, including engineered tissues and organs, AI- and model-based biological simulation, and advanced animal experimentation. By upgrading and centrally managing in vivo research facilities, the Center provides a shared foundation that suppots life-science research across disciplines.
  • The Center for Human Immunological Diseases and Therapy Development (cCHID)
The cCHID advances translational research to accelerate the development of therapies for immune-related diseases. By integrating basic immunology with technologies such as single-cell analysis, data science, and clinical collaboration, the Center bridges discovery and clinical application to create new immunotherapies and diagnostic approaches.

Empowering Researchers and Research Management Professionals

  • Research and Development Management and Governance
Centered on the Academic Research and Innovation Management Organization (IMO), Chiba University is building a research development management system that enables research professionals to grow through hands-on training and clear career pathways.
By developing and empowering these research management professionals as key contributors to research strategy and university leadership, the University is accelerating its evolution as a globally connected research university.
